Film and Moving Image
Likas (short film)
Likas explores identity through the artist’s experience as a white-passing Filipino American. The title references a skin-whitening soap commonly used in the Philippines, reflecting layered histories of beauty, colonial influence and self-perception.
Rice, a central element in Filipino culture and daily life, appears throughout the film as both material and symbol. The work incorporates found audio describing how to cook rice, alongside a traditional Filipino song associated with the Binisuan dance.
Through sound, gesture and material, the film reflects on cultural identity, inheritance and the negotiation of belonging.
